Free-Motion Fillers

This class is for those who have taken Suzi’s Beginning Free-Motion Machine Quilting class, or have been doing free-motion quilting on their own and want to move past basic stipple or meandering. It is helpful to have practiced the five basic shapes of free-motion quilting (straight line, arc, loop, hook, and S-curve) as learned in Suzi’s beginner class. We will learn the following fillers in class: Shells or Headbands, bubbles or stones, bananas, swirls (simple and complex), McTavishing, 2 kinds of flowers, and matchsticks.

Suzi Dillinger, 2018

1) Machine with free-motion foot, extended work surface (like Sew Steady table)
2) Supreme Slider
3) Sketchbook (at least 9” X 12” size) and several pencils
4) Quilting gloves
5) Thread snips or small scissors
6) Thread that is slightly darker than your fabric. Good choices are, Aurifil
(orange cone), Sew Fine, Mettler 60 wt. Embroidery, Isacord.
7) Quilt tops (2) measuring 24” square with a light colored plain fabric.
8) Backing fabric and batting (batting that contains some cotton works best with
the basting spray – polyester does not stay stuck together) that measures
approx. 30” square. This will allow you some space for your hands to hold
the quilt when quilting close to the edges of the top.
9) Spray baste the top, batting and backing (centering the top fabric) before class
with 505 spray (do not use June Tailor spray)
10) Permanent marker like a Sharpie or Identi-pen for marking quilt top sections in
